2023 BAFTA Film Award Longlist Announced

Reading time: 1 minutes and 52 seconds

Last week, BAFTA announced the longlist of nominations for the 2023 EE BAFTA Film Awards. The categories include Director and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

In the Director category, Charlotte Wells, Edward Berger, Martin McDonagh, Marie Kreutzer, Park Chan-wook, Baz Luhrmann, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Sara Dosa, Colm Bairéad, Alice Diop, Maria Schrader, Todd Field, Chinonye Chukwu, Joseph Kosinski, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Sarah Polley were all longlisted — huge congratulations to all of these brilliant directors.

Although named here, we were disappointed to see that their names were not included on the official BAFTA longlist page and press release.

The same was also true for the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer category. Unfortunately, we don’t know who was recognised for their work as a director on these films as they weren’t listed — so we would like to congratulate the fantastic directors of all these films: Charlotte Wells, Georgia Oakley, Jay Bedwani, Marie Lidén, Frances O'Connor, Sophie Hyde, Kathryn Ferguson, Maia Kenworthy and Elena Sánchez Bellot, Tom George and Larry Achiampong

Directors UK is committed to protecting the role of the director and implore BAFTA to celebrate their nominated filmmakers with full accreditation. We’ve written directly to BAFTA to ask that directors are properly credited going forward and shared our concerns on social media

The full BAFTA longlist is available to read on their website.
