British documentary-maker Penny Woolcock was named this year’s recipient of the Sheffield Doc/Fest Inspiration Award at last night’s award ceremony (17th June).
Woolcock, whose latest film From The Sea To The Land Beyond had its world premiere at the festival, was described as a director who “combines a real empathy for her subjects, and never underestimates the intelligence of the audience” by Doc/Fest chairman Alex Graham.
It was also announced that next year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest – the 20th edition of the festival – will see the introduction of the Tim Hetherington Award, named in honour of the photojournalist and co-director of Restrepo, who was killed in a mortar attack in Libya last year.
