The nominations for this year’s BAFTA Film Awards were announced this morning (9th January). Although no British directors have been nominated in the Best Director category, Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables is in the running for Best Film.
This year the contenders for Best Director come from all across the globe, with Taiwanese-born filmmaker Ang Lee (Life of Pi) up against the Austrian Michael Haneke (Amour), and three Americans: Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) and Ben Affleck (Argo).
Meanwhile in the Best Film category, Hooper’s Les Miserables will go head-to-head with Argo, Life of Pi and Zero Dark Thirty, along with Lincoln, by veteran director Steven Spielberg. Les Miserables is also nominated in the Best British Film category, alongside Sam Mendes’ Skyfall, Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina, Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths and John Madden’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
UK directors do at least dominate the shortlist for the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, with nominees made up of The Muppets’ director James Bobin, Wild Bill director Dexter Fletcher and writer Danny King, I Am Nasrine director Tina Gharavi, The Imposter director Bart Layton and producer Dmitri Doganis, and McCullin director David Morris and director/producer Jacqui Morris.
There’s also a good showing for British film in the Documentary category, with The Imposter and McCullin again picking up nominations, along with fellow Brit Kevin Macdonald’s Marley, Malik Bendjelloul’s Searching for Sugarman and Amy Berg’s West of Memphis.
