Rufus Norris and Bart Layton have both been nominated in the Best Director and the Best Debut Director (the Douglas Hickox Award) categories for the British Independent Film Awards, which were announced today.
Norris’s nomination comes for his well-received drama Broken, which screened as part of last month’s London Film Festival. Layton, meanwhile, has been selected for The Imposter, one of only a handful of documentaries to make over a £1million at the UK box office.
In the Best Director category, the two directors will go up against Ben Wheatley for his soon-to-be-released black comedy Sightseers, Peter Strickland, who’s nominated for his psychological thriller Berberian Sound Studio, and director of the hugely successful The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, John Madden. Those five films also make up the nominees for the Best British Independent Film category.
Meanwhile, for the Douglas Hickox Award, Norris and Layton are joined by Ben Drew for his urban drama iLL Manors, Rowan Athale for his thriller Wasteland, and Sally El-Hasini for My Brother the Devil, another film that made a splash at this year’s LFF.
The Imposter also picked up a third nomination, receiving another nod in the Best Documentary category. Nominated alongside it are Carol Morley’s Dreams of a Life, Kevin Macdonald’s Marley, Julien Temple’s London: A Modern Babylon and Laurent Bouzereau’s Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir.
The British Independent Film Awards take place on Sunday 9th December.
