Our colleagues at CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers) have published the first global study on the economic impact of AI on creators in the music and audiovisual industries. It calculates that Generative AI will enrich tech companies while substantially jeopardising the income of human creators in the next five years. Creators risk losing a large share of their current income due to AI’s substitutional impact on human-made works. Audiovisual creators will see 21% of their revenues at risk of loss by 2028.
CEO Andy Harrower responded to the report saying: “This report highlights the enormous value generative AI companies are getting from the creativity of directors and other artists. The AI industry is literally built from the works of millions of creators, but they are not getting a say in how their works are used - or benefitting from that use. There must be a regulatory framework that recognises the value of creative works and protects creators’ rights. AI should be an exciting opportunity for both creators and the tech industry - but we need to ensure protections are in place, and human creativity isn’t pushed aside in a rush to embrace it without question. After all, without the works of these creators, AI is just software.”
CISAC is the largest global network of authors’ rights societies representing six million creators. The report was published by research analysts PMP Strategy and was commissioned by CISAC.
