Biography

Sophie Black has been a storyteller since she could first speak, but her previous career choices - from being Head of Post-Production at a Corporate Agency for seven years, to founding her own production company and producing BAFTA-longlisted short-form work - have given her a practical knowledge of every stage of production, as well as a great understanding of working with different deadlines and budgets, all of which has fed into the way she leads a team as a director. It was perhaps her earliest career (working in the art & costume departments of numerous independent films) that gave her such a distinct creative flare as a director; it not only inspired a strong use of vibrant imagery and design in every film that she makes, but also gave her an eagle-eyed attention for detail in every corner of the frame. She is a lover of fantasy and magical realism, but is also deeply passionate about working with actors, drawing out the nuance and heart of every character no matter the scale of the production. She is now actively pursuing feature film work & authored high-end television drama, with multiple projects in development. Sophie has directed nine short films, most notably 'A Different Place' (BFI NETWORK-funded, with festival selections including Vancouver International Film Festival, BFI Flare, Norwich Film Festival, and Flatpack Film Festival), and 'Night Owls', which premiered at LSFF in 2016 and went on to win 17 awards at smaller festivals around the world, including the MMBF Rising Star Award in 2018. Sophie is a BAFTA Connect member, and was also accepted into BAFTA Crew as a director in both 2018 & 2019.
