Biography

Matt Houghton is an award-winning filmmaker. His films experiment in particular with form, often treading the line between fact and fiction. His latest short film Landline won the 2018 Grierson Award for Best Documentary Short and was selected as one of Vimeo’s Best Of The Year 2019. His first short film Dear Araucaria, made in partnership with the Guardian, was released to much acclaim, winning the Audience Award at Sheffield Doc/Fest 2015. Later that year, Matt worked as second unit director on BAFTA-nominated feature Notes On Blindness before being selected as part of the class of ‘16 on the BFI’s NET.WORK@LFF professional development programme. The following year, Matt released two more shorts, Four Weddings, his second film made with the Guardian, and Hands Up, Chin Down which had its world premiere at Sheffield Doc/Fest 2018. A founding member of multi-award-winning studio Fee Fie Foe and recently named as both a Film London Lodestar and a member of Berlinale Talents 2020, Matt is currently developing his debut feature.

In a world that prizes traditional masculinity and in which ideas of ancestry are fundamental, being gay can be isolating. Dear Araucaria Short Film View

Winner, Sheffield Doc/Fest Audience Award 2015 Better known by his pseudonym Araucaria, John set the Guardian cryptic crossword for 55 years. In December 2012, crossword number 25,842 appeared in the paper with a series of clues that once solved, revealed a personal message from Araucaria to his puzzle-solving followers. A puzzle in itself, this short film unpicks crossword number 25,842 to journey into John’s world of clue-making. Shifting between imagination and reality, Dear Araucaria meets the man who has given his life to crosswords and is only now coming to understand the dramatic impact he has had on a community of solvers. 2015
