Biography
Jan started out as an actress mostly performing classical theatre until the 1990s when she began making short films, most notably her comedies Mary’s Date and Joan, both audience winners. Following the release in 2006 of her first feature film Gypo, The Hollywood Reporter stated the film had marked her out as “a filmmaker to watch” with Screen International calling her “a very promising new British Talent”. Gypo became multi-award winning including a British Independent Film Award (BIFA) for Outstanding Achievement in Production. Another low budget concise write and shoot came with Ruby Blue, starring Bob Hoskins and French screen legend, Josiane Balasko in her first English language role. A string of festival awards followed again including Best Film Award at the London Independent Film Festival and in the US awards including Grand Jury Prize (Best Film) at Washington DC independent Film Festival, Audience Award for Best Narrative Film at Chicago LGBT FF and a number of nominations for best original screenplay. The film has also won a number of Audience Awards at minor festivals.
Her most recent film The Calling, with a stellar British cast including Brenda Blethyn, Susannah York (in her last film), Rita Tushingham, Amanda Donohoe, Pauline McLynn, Susannah Harker and Joanna Scanlan also won a number of accolades.
All films released theatrically and on DVD in the UK and sold internationally.
She is prepping Afghan Man, a war film/humanist film set in a military hospital in contemporary Kabul, Afghanistan. She has also adapted the Rose Tremain best-seller Sacred Country with Pippa Cross at the Producing helm.
She has a number of films in development and is interested in directing television drama.
