Biography
Syd Heather is an award-winning filmmaker, writer/director, and producer based in Kent, with over a decade of experience across narrative films, documentaries, and branded content.
An associate member of Directors UK, Syd recently joined the prestigious BAFTA Connect programme, following his selection for BFI Network x BAFTA Crew (2018–2022).
Syd’s work as a writer/director spans multiple genres, including horror, comedy, and documentary. His supernatural thriller ON AIR, starring Mandip Gill (Doctor Who), premiered at FrightFest and won Best Actress for Gill at TweetFest. His adventure-comedy SODABIKES, funded by Peabody, was distributed by Shorts International and explores sibling rivalry in a race to scatter their mother’s ashes.
As a producer, Syd co-produced the BAFTA-longlisted GYPSY'S KISS (from a Challenge Alexa winning script), starring Gemma Jones and Una Stubbs, and the LGBTQ+ docudrama HAVE WE MET BEFORE?, commissioned by BBC and BFI. The latter, part of the Born Digital series, examined decades of gay male relationships and is now distributed by Peccadillo Pictures.
In addition to narrative work, Syd has directed branded content for clients such as Hasbro UK, Confused.com, and Folkestone & Hythe Council. His passion for Kent-based stories led to his debut feature documentary MICROPUBS - THE NEW LOCAL, exploring the UK’s craft beer revolution. The film is available on platforms such as Amazon Prime and Tubi.
Currently, Syd is developing a slate of feature films, including a supernatural thriller rooted in British folklore, and is in postproduction on his second documentary feature about independent cinemas in Kent. He remains committed to crafting bold, distinctive stories that balance humour, heart, and visual experimentation.
