Biography
Syd is an award-winning filmmaker, writer/director and producer based in Kent working across narrative projects, documentaries and branded content. Alongside being a current member of Directors U.K. Syd has recently been accepted on the brand new Bafta Connect programme, following three years on the BFI Network x Bafta Crew scheme for emerging creatives between 2018-2022.
His short film portfolio as a writer/director includes a wide range of horror, comedy and documentary projects including On Air, a supernatural thriller written by Zara Symes starring Mandip Gill (Doctor Who) and Marnie Baxter (Shetland) made by BFI Network x Bafta Crew participants during the pandemic and has since screened at FrightFest, LSFF and TweetFest, where Mandip Gill also won Best Actress.
Additionally, adventure-comedy Sodabikes (written by Darren Rapier) follows three adult siblings who abandon their late mother's wake to race around their childhood home on fake motorbikes to decide who releases her ashes. The film was part funded by Peabody to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their Thamesmead Housing Project and has since been distributed by Shorts International across Europe, North America and the USA.
Notable producing credits include co-producing the BAFTA-longlisted & Omeleto distributed Gypsy's Kiss starring Gemma Jones, Una Stubbs & Graham Seed based on one of the six winning scripts for Challenge Alexa 2017 by ARRI & Directors UK.
Syd also produced Have We Met Before? an LGBTQ+ docudrama for BBC & BFI as part of their Born Digital series in 2019 which celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Internet. The film explores the history of sex in the homosexual community over the last five decades and has since been distributed by Peccadillo Pictures on their critically acclaimed anthology series, Boys on Film 22.
Outside of film and tv production, he has created branded documentaries and online content for the likes of Hasbro UK, Confused.com, Visit Maidstone, Growing Green, NIAB and Folkestone & Hythe Council.
Syd is passionate about creating and distributing Kent-based stories and in 2020, he released his debut documentary feature, Micropubs - The New Local looking at the Kentish micropub movement and craft beer revolution which has played international film festivals and is now available at various streaming platforms worldwide including Amazon Prime, Tubi TV and GuideDoc.
Syd is currently developing his slate of feature film projects including his next documentary feature about off-the-grid living, and his first fiction feature - a supernatural thriller exploring British folklore and childhood fears. There are also a few micro-feature comedies in the mix too!
