Mikko Makela

Named by IndieWire as one of 25 LGBTQ Filmmakers on the Rise (2019), Mikko is a Finnish-British filmmaker based in London. His feature debut as writer/director A MOMENT IN THE REEDS played at over 80 festivals worldwide (incl. BFI London Film Festival, Seattle IFF, Frameline & NewFest) and was released in the UK by Peccadillo Pictures. The film was nominated for the BIFA Discovery Award as well as two Jussi Awards in Finland (Best Actor & Supporting Actor). Prior to this, Mikko directed a number of music and fashion videos as well as working as an editor in drama and commercials. Mikko is an alumnus of both BFI Network X BAFTA Crew and Berlinale Talents. With an interest in stories that explore identity, and a focus on marginalised characters and individuals at odds with society, he is currently developing his sophomore feature with the BFI.
