Joyce Datiles

JOYCE DATILES is a multidisciplinary artist, writer / director and historian. She was awarded the O. B. Hardison Artist Research Fellowship 2023 by the Folger Shakespeare Institute to develop her Elizabethan television series, THE LANDLORD’S DARK-HAIRED DAUGHTER. Her upcoming experimental shorts, TO SEE THE CORPSE ALIVE and I LIKE WHAT YOU’VE DONE WITH THE WOLVES secured National Lottery funding and are backed by Arts Council England. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence at Folger Library.

Joyce was selected for BAFTA Connect 2023 and by Creative England as one of ten female filmmakers for its inaugural Industry Equals: Women in Screen incubator. She is an alum of Torino Film Lab, Young Vic Theatre Directors, Cambridge Film Festival Writers Lab and DirectorsUK Inspire. She was selected for BAD WOLF TV / THE OTHER ROOM THEATRE Emerging Writers where she developed ARCLIGHT, her historical fantasy that was a Top 4 Finalist in the Amazon Prime Video x TriForce WriterSlam.

Her work has screened and won at Cannes, Sundance, PRADA Journal, Saatchi Art, VOGUE Italia, TATE Modern and Open City Docs London, among others. She co-founded the mixed-media art company, THE SPECTACLE MAKERS PRODUCTIONS with her long-time collaborator, the award-winning musician DEAR DAYSTAR. Spectacle Makers is supported by the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund and based at Somerset House.

Alongside her creative career, Joyce is an academic historian and UN Women delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She holds a dual doctorate in ancient history and visual anthropology from University College London, where she is currently a research fellow specialising in ancient heroism and battle. Prior to UCL she graduated from Oxford, Cambridge and Georgetown. She works between the UK and USA.
