Biography

Jason Smith is a multi award winning TV commercials, music video and film director based in London and LA.

Jason grew up in countries as diverse as Sri Lanka, the Lebanon, Iran, Greece and Pakistan. After graduating with a BAhons in English and Film he sailed the Atlantic and directed his first documentary about local life in the Caribbean. His break came when he directed, produced, lit and edited a short film on Barcelona that he sold to MTV. In that same year he was nominated for “New Director of the year” at Cannes and won the first of many awards for his Alain Afflelou and Puma Campaigns. This was quickly followed up with a D&AD for his British Army campaign. He has since gone on to direct more than 200 commercials for clients including Nike, Coca-Cola, Audi, Mitsubishi, EA, NFL, Under Armour, Mountain Dew, Sony, Gatorade, BMW and many others. His Nike “Lance” and Audi “Living Room” commercials went on to win the prestigious AICP award and have featured at MOMA in New York. Since then Jason has won many Cannes, BTAA, and Creative Circle awards amongst others and has been nominated three times at D&AD. His BBC Voice Trailer has recently won seven advertising and TV awards.

Aside from commercials his Electronic music video was screened at Rushes short film festival and then at Edinburgh festival two years running. In 2015 Jason was commissioned by EA sports to develop the script and direct the live action for the latest “Need For Speed” video game. The ambition was to seamlessly blend live action with CG footage to create an immersive authentic experience where the player plays a role with real life characters in each scene. After four months in script development, the shoot took place over two months in various locations around London.

Jason has just completed a feature documentary “Cross Country” following acclaimed sculptor Jon Krawczyk across 18 states from LA to NYC with his 9/11 memorial sculpture strapped to the back of a pick up truck. “Through Jon’s extraordinary journey and the passion of people across the nation, award-winning director, Jason Smith creates a thought provoking film and an inspirational, vivid portrayal of America today.” Jon’s sculpture now proudly stands opposite Ground Zero, NYC.
