Biography

Matthew made his first short in 1994 and then went on to train as an actor, working professionally for over a decade before co-founding Fizz and Ginger Films in 2009 when he moved to full-time directing. Since then he has completed three theatrical features, The Isle, Two Down and recently Infinitum: Subject Unknown with Ian McKellen, as well TV film Miss In Her Teens for North America. 

He was picked by Screen International for their 'Stars of Tomorrow' 2013 and has just released a book worldwide on indie filmmaking.

Based on David Garrick's play written in 1747, Miss in Her Teens farcically follows Biddy Bellair and her suitors as she waits for her true love to return home from the wars in France. To entertain herself in his absence, she allows outrageous fop Fribble and blustering faker Flash to pay her court . All the while planning on how she can persuade her Aunt's choice of suitor, the old Sir Simon Loveit, that she is not the wife for him. Narrated by Ian McKellen and featuring Simon Callow. 2014
Two Down Feature Film View

Two Down is the first theatrical feature from Fizz and Ginger Films, whom Screen International (UK), picked for their 'Stars of Tomorrow' edition in 2013. Set in modern day London, Two Down is nevertheless inspired by films of the 1970's, which gives this clever little thriller an interesting spin in the look, the dialogue and the sound. After surviving an explosion in Iraq, Mr. Thomas leaves the infuriating desk job the army had created for him and enters the underground world of the contract killer. His brother, Sam, had been caught selling on army secrets to the highest bidder and is now working for the illusive Harry Montagu. They use Mr. Thomas as a very effective way of eliminating problems they encounter in their business. That is until Mr. Thomas begins to question whom these problems are that he is removing, and why they deserve this fate. We start the film with Mr. Thomas following a target, a young woman. All is not as it seems as she manages to fight him off long enough for someone in the shadows to shoot him in the back. Thinking him dead they walk away, leaving him to die in the alleyway. Mr. Thomas, surviving, but injured, manages to get to a safe house owned by a friend. When he arrives however his friend is no longer there but a young woman, Sophie. Through necessity he takes her, and the local take-away delivery boy, hostage and waits for his partner to pick him up. Hours later he is still waiting and over the course of the evening, with the help of a bottle of whiskey and a Chinese take-away, they slowly unravel the events of the evening to discover that Mr. Thomas was set up. Led by a very keen Sophie they try to work out by who and why. But why is Sophie so eager to get to the bottom of the events of the evening? There is more than one mystery that Mr. Thomas has to solve, and he's quickly running out of time. The film features Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones, Suits), Felicity Montagu (Alan Partridge), Amy Manson (Once Upon A Time), Alex Hassell (Anonymous, RSC), Tori Hart (Keeping Rosy), Graham Butler ( Penny Dreadful), and host of great British actors. The Isle Feature Film View

The latest feature, recently completed, The Isle is a supernatural thriller starring Conleth Hill, Fisayo Akinade, Alex Hassell and Tori Butler Hart. 1846 and another ship crashes on the rocks of an almost deserted island in Scotland. Three sailors survive the wreck and make it to shore where the few locals take them in as they wait for the mainland boat to come for them. But the sailors' survival story has only just started as they uncover the strange past of the once vibrant island. The Isle has just been completed and is distributed by Great Point Media. 2017
Infinitum: Subject Unknown Feature Film View
Description Year
Shot during the first lockdown of 2020, with cameos from Sir Ian McKellen and Conleth Hill, the crew worked remotely so only Matthew and Tori were ever physically on set. An experimental sci-fi, the film has been released around the world, including cinemas in the U.S, and was the Number 2 film in Australia and New Zealand in March 2021. 2021
