Biography

Heart-led writer/director, Emma Swinton is always looking for empathy in her work, she has a passion for telling stories of lost voices. Shamanically trained, and with a love of genre and magical-realism, Emma’s work centres around herstory, folklore, and justice. Currently a Mentee on the 2025 WFTV Mentorship Programme supported by Netflix, Emma's BFI funded short, THE WITCH'S DAUGHTER earned her a nomination for Best British Director at the British Short Film Awards 2023. Her vast experience includes working at the production companies of leading British Directors, Ridley Scott and Sally Potter, and shadowing and assisting the Emmy winning director, Jessica Hobbs, on series five of THE CROWN. With four shorts under her belt, Emma has received film funding from BFI, Arri, and Directors UK. Her films have screened at festivals, including Palm Springs, Calgary, Underwire, Aesthetica, and London Short Film Festival. Based in Edinburgh, Emma is currently in development on a feature and two TV series.
