Ruth Carney

Ruth Carney is an experienced TV, Film and Theatre director who has worked both on the West End and Broadway. Ruth has just directed her first feature film Amazing Grace written by and starring Daniel P.Lewis with Hannah Walters, James Nelson Joyce and Chanel Cresswell. Prior to this Ruth has been directing Call The Midwife for Neal Street; Waterloo Road for Wall to Wall and Warner Bros; Tell Me Everything for Noho and ITV and the last four episodes of Season Five of Brassic for Sky. She has directed episodes of Death in Paradise including a Christmas Special. Prior to this she directed Father Brown, Casualty and Holby for the BBC and Emmerdale for ITV. Ruth started TV directing by successfully completing the BBC Directors Scheme at Doctors. Ruth has an MA in Theatre Directing from The Russian Theatre Academy Moscow, and Middlesex University. She gained her BA (Hons) from The University of Sheffield and was a participant on the National Theatres Emerging Directors Course. . THEATRE Most recently Ruth directed Two by Jim Cartwright at The New Vic Theatre. Last year she directed the World Premiere of The Miami Showband Story at The Opera House Belfast. As Associate Director at Sheffield Theatres in the inaugural season after reopening, Ruth directed the highly acclaimed verbatim play Sisters by Stephanie Street. She also directed Confessions of a City by Richard Hurford, a promenade piece using the entire Crucible Theatre building and this was billed as Sheffield Telegraphs “Cultural event of the decade”. She produced the Forge Festival, which saw the theatre alive with new writing and was the first outing of the hit play Bull by Mike Barlett. Ruth was Associate Director to Matthew Warchus on Lord of the Rings at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Ghost The Musical and the National Tour of Our House. Ruth’s’ other directing credits include the UK Professional Premiere of The Laramie Project at Sound Theatre, London starring Russell Tovey and Andrew Garfield and the World Premiere of The Lemon Princess by Rachael McGill from an original idea by Ruth Carney-Nash at The West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds.
