Biography

Carey read English at Cambridge and studied filmmaking in the NYU Tisch School of the Arts graduate film program. Her thesis film HEARTSPACE screened at Cinequest, Clermont-Ferrand, FESPACO and the Johannesburg Biennale. As a screenwriter Carey received further training at the Binger Film Lab in Amsterdam. She has done residencies in Berlin with Nipkow Foundation and at Blue Mountain Centre and Millay Colony. Carey's first feature COLD HARBOUR features Tony Kgoroge (MANDELA) Fana Mokoena (WORLD WAR Z) Deon Lotz (BEAUTY) and Yu Nan (THE EXPENDABLES) in a noir thriller about a township cop who takes on the Triad and police corruption in Cape Town. UIP gave the film a nationwide release in South Africa. It has screened in competition at DIFF (South Africa), AFRIFF (Nigeria), Carthage (Tunis), PAFF (Los Angeles), Romafrica (Italy), Film fra Sor (Norway) and opened the New York African Film Festival. This summer Cold Harbour screens in Berlin, Cologne and other German cities as part of 'Filme aus Afrika'. Online distribution will be announced soon. ORIGINAL CHILD BOMB, a feature documentary about the human cost of nuclear weapons, premiered at Tribeca 2004 and won the grand jury prize at both Silverdocs and Bologna Human Rights Nights. Other festival screenings include Seattle, Florida, Hawaii, Copenhagen, Geneva, Seoul, Belgrade, Hiroshima, MOMA and the Japan Society NYC. An associated short film, B is for BOMB, won the Cannes 2006 Short Film Corner. Originally from Cape Town (South Africa) Carey has lived in London, New York and Berlin. She is a British / South African dual national.
