Tom's love of storytelling stems from his Grandfather, Joesph Barker, who told him stories about growing up in the East End of London, how he survived the war, overcame the working class prejudice against him, married the love of his life, and had a lot of fun along the way. This love of stories led to a love of film, from his first trip to the cinema to see Peter Pan to watching Empire Strikes Back every day one school holiday. He started ‘borrowing’ his dad’s camcorder to make videos with his friends growing up. He went on to study film at university; upon graduating, Tom co-founded a successful video agency called Story Culture with his good friend Pete Bailey. At Story Culture, alongside writing and directing short films, Tom directed/produced and edited content for some of the biggest brands in the world, such as Facebook, Unilever, and Google. Wanting to move more into Film & TV, in 2017, Tom Co-Founded View 35 FIlms with his producing partner Shelley. Tom and Shelley are a husband & wife filmmaking duo. Since 2017, they have made several short films - that have been staff-picked by Vimeo and selected at Oscar-qualifying festivals. Tom's feature film debut, 'The Draw,' was also a View 35 film debut feature. In an oppressive world, where free will is becoming a thing of the past, all analogue imagery is restricted and replaced by a new technology called ‘The EyeLight’. Alec and Jade must try to fight the system and the ever present show ‘The Draw’ which soon infiltrates their lives to pose a very real danger. Alec lives under a repressive society which monitors his every movement, while working at the central avatar store where customers can design and be their idealised online persona; a symbol of the EyeLight based technological revolution that Alec viscerally resists. His isolation is punctured by the arrival of Jade, an equally rebellious figure but one who plays the system far more strategically. Their unfolding forbidden relationship will push the two of them to the very brink. Meanwhile, the politically motivated gameshow, known as ‘The Draw’, rapidly increases in popularity, ominously evolving into an all too real hunt which threatens the desperate contestants lives all in the name of entertainment. The Draw is the exciting debut from UK filmmaker Tom Ruddock.
