Biography
Joshua has a diverse background, in Drama, Documentary and Commercials and continues to Direct across genres. Having served his apprenticeship assisting some of the UK’s best Drama and Documentary makers, in 2006 Joshua directed his first broadcast documentary, the chilling and inventive, The Boy who Killed his Best Friend, for Channel 4. Joshua’s distinctive voice as a filmmaker truly emerged in 2007 with his musical documentary Karaoke Soul, which mixes intimate observational documentary with musical performances from the central characters. The Guardian commented: “Neale has come up with a genre all of his own – a docu-music video.” and the film resulted in Joshua being nominated for the 2007 Bafta breakthrough award. Shooting much of his own work, Joshua’s films are characterised by a palpable intimacy with his contributors and a dramatic nuance, style and atmosphere. This was further demonstrated in his 2008 film Cotton Wool Kids-Tales of Modern Childhood for Channel 4’s prime time ‘Cutting Edge’ strand. Joshua recently completed his first feature length Documentary Despicable Dick and Righteous Richard which premiered in competition at the 2011 Tribecca Film festival. The film has since gone ion to screen at numerous international film festivals to critical and audience acclaim before its broadcast debut on the BBC. Joshua is represented by Smuggler for commercial work and has directed award winning work for brands including, Lurpak, IKEA, Panasonic, Nokia, Johnnie Walker and Nike Jordan.
