Biography

Philip Smith is an award-winning director, writer and producer with wide-ranging experience from documentary films to factual drama, commercial projects and 3D. He is skilled at crafting strong human narratives and has made films in the worlds of music, sport, arts, science, history and travel. His work has received critical acclaim for its powerful storytelling and innovative visual style.

He has recently directed two films for Amazon as part of the premium documentary event series This is Football. The series explores the emotions, stories, passions and triumphs at the heart of the world’s most loved sport. It launched in August 2019 on Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

Previous work includes: a film with a unique take on the solo music of The Beatles; the BBC drama-documentary Frankenstein and The Vampyre(narrated by Claire Foy); and a documentary with the artist Damien Hirst. He was also a director on the George Michael feature length documentary Freedom

Other films include: Superfly, a highly individual retelling of a century of genetics which received a Royal Television Society Award, two films in the BAFTA and RTS award-winning series This is Modern Art and a film in the BAFTA and RTS nominated BBC series Seven Wonders of the Industrial World.
