Philip John

Born in Newport, South Wales, Philip is a multi award winning and multi BAFTA nominated director and screenwriter. Philip shared a BAFTA CYMRU with writer and producer, for Best TV Drama winnder, BANG.

Philip is a freelance screenwriter director, and MD of his own production company, Orange River Ltd, balancing a career between cinema slate, and high profile network television. 

Philip’s first feature, MOON DOGS, won Best International First Feature at the Galway Fleadh 2016, as well as the Audience Award and Distributors Award at the Mannheim/Heidelberg International Film Festival 2016. It also won the Jury Award for Best Film at Newport Beach International Film Festival. 

Recent TV credits include four episodes of Amazon/Sony show OUTLANDER (including the feature length season two finale episode,) three seasons of DOWNTON ABBEY and three US shows for Marvel/Disney – IRON FIST, CLOAK AND DAGGER and RUNAWAYS.

Alongside THE LONG WAY, Philip’s movie slate also includes LET THERE BE ROCK, a bittersweet comedy about a failing Welsh choir, starring Anthony Hopkins, and ARRANGEMENTS OF LOVE, an adaptation of the novel by Timeri Murari, co written with Nimmi Harasgama. Producer Sunitha Tati of Guru.

Philip is a Director’s UK and DGA member, and has served as a jury member for BAFTA over many years. He has also given many directing master classes, for BAFTA, the BFI, student film festivals and film schools.

Philip lives with his wife, writer Sian Hughes and their three children in Cardiff Wales
