Biography

Katja Roberts grew up on the film sets of the Amber Film and Photography collective, which is where her passion for filmmaking was born. Her directing career began with observational documentaries and her attention to the micro details of human behaviour went on to set the tone for her future work. She is drawn to stories that explore the complexity of being human; the tragic-comic layers to our daily lives as well as the way we fumble beautifully through life’s big events. She is also motivated to navigate difficult territories in ways that subvert expectation and leave audiences thinking.  As creative director of Meerkat Films she has 15 years’ experience writing, directing and editing across documentary, factual TV and drama. Her work has reached audiences through the BBC, National Geographic, online platforms and festivals worldwide. Katja is also a multi-camera director and editor and works closely with theatre teams to create innovative digital content, often with a focus on social change.
