STATEMENT: DIRECTORS UK RESPONDS TO PROJECT DIAMOND SEVENTH CUT REPORT

12 September 2024

Read the full statement from Directors UK in response to the Creative Diversity Network's Project Diamond Seventh Cut Report, published today (12 September 2024).

None of the figures around directing are good enough. It is troubling to see that contributions from underrepresented groups still fall below national workforce averages. It’s particularly concerning to see that contributions from women directors have fallen significantly, again. The people who make editorial decisions are key to what we all see on screen – directors must represent society.

These figures show that targeted interventions to ‘level the playing field’ for specific groups don’t work. Change must be wholesale and intersectional for these figures to finally reflect our national workforce averages.

We’re seven years into Diamond data, we urgently need broadcasters to come together to make changes to their practices, creating paths of progression between their organisations that will lead to sustainable, supported careers.
