STATEMENT: DIRECTORS UK RESPONDS TO FILM + TV CHARITY'S LOOKING GLASS SURVEY 2024

4 February 2025

Statement from Andy Harrower, Directors UK CEO in response to the publication of the Film + TV Charity's Looking Glass Survey 2024, published on Wednesday 4 February 2025:

Poor mental health has for too long been accepted as the price that has to be paid to get TV programmes and films made.

The findings of this report are not surprising, but they are horrific.

With 30% of respondees reporting having thoughts of taking their own life in the past 12 months, how is it not the single most important priority for this industry to improve the conditions that feed poor mental health?

This survey shows that when employers use the best practice in the FTVC Whole Picture Toolkit, there are demonstrably better outcomes for the mental health of the workers on those productions. This proves that mentally healthy productions are truly within the employers’ power to control.
