Lynne Ramsay’s 2012 awards success continued at last night’s Evening Standard Film Awards, where her latest picture We Need to Talk About Kevin was awarded Best Film.
The film, an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name by Lionel Shriver, stars Tilda Swinton as a mother to a son responsible for a high school massacre.
Meanwhile, John Michael McDonagh’s film The Guard saw off tough competition from box-office smash The Inbetweeners Movie to win the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy. The Guard stars Brendan Gleeson as an incompetent and foul-mouthed Irish police officer tasked with bringing down a drug-smuggling ring with the help of an FBI agent.
The award for Most Promising Newcomers went to duo Tom Kingsley and Will Sharpe, who directed and wrote the low-budget Black Pond, a family drama starring Simon Amstell and Chris Langham.
Best Documentary went to Asif Kapadia’s Senna, which details the life and career of the Formula 1 champion who died tragically on the track in 1994. Finally, the award for Best Blockbuster went to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 2, directed by David Yates.
