Directors UK is extremely pleased to announce that Gurinder Chadha, Mandie Fletcher and Stephen Frears will be headlining this year’s Directors’ Festival, taking place on Saturday 16 July.
These three directors will be joining us and a crowd of Directors UK members for the UK’s biggest celebration of screen directing talent. Taking place at Altitude London, the Directors’ Festival is the only festival organised by directors for directors.
Gurinder Chadha OBE is one of the most respected feature producer-directors in the UK, known for directing Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice, Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging, as well as numerous shorts and documentaries including I’m British But.... Gurinder’s next film, Viceroy’s House, will be released later this year, starring Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Michael Gambon and Om Puri.
Stephen Frears made his name in TV drama before moving into features with The Hit and My Beautiful Laundrette. His career has taken in stints working in both the UK and the US, with notable works including Philomena, Mrs. Henderson Presents, Dangerous Liaisons, Dirty Pretty Things, Tamara Drewe and High Fidelity. He has been nominated twice for Best Director at the Oscars, for The Queen and The Grifters.
Gurinder and Stephen will each take part in Q&A sessions in the main auditorium, answering questions from our audience and social media.
And then it’ll be time to break out the “sweetie, darlings”, as we close the festival with a special screening of Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, followed by a Q&A with director Mandie Fletcher.
Mandie Fletcher has worked on some of the most well-known and best-loved British comedy programmes, including Butterflies, Blackadder, Only Fools and Horses, Absolutely Fabulous, Miranda, Blandings, Stella, Roger & Val Have Just Got In and Jam and Jerusalem. She was named Director of the Year by Women in Film and Television in 2011. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie follows her other two features, Deadly Advice and Born Kicking.
And that’s just for starters - the rest of the day will be filled with a wide range of exciting sessions, ensuring that there’s something for everyone - whatever genre you work in and whatever stage you’re at in your career.
The day includes sessions on Virtual Camera, pitching, post-production, directing presenters, advertising and animation.
Full session details and panellists will be announced very soon.
The Directors’ Festival is open to all Directors UK members and entry is completely FREE. There will also be food and drink served throughout the day and plenty of time to socialise with your fellow directors.
