Wow, what a powerful piece of filmmaking #Journeyman was. It's now time for the Q&A with the film's writer, director and star @PaddyConsidine, chaired by @ChrisHewitt #DUKJourneyman

Paddy Considine is an award-winning actor and filmmaker. His first feature as director, Tyrannosaur, won the 2011 BIFA Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director, alongside directing awards at Sundance and Nantucket. It also received the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut. Journeyman is his latest film.
Chris Hewitt is the host of the Empire Podcast, and a writer for Empire Magazine.
Chris opens by asking if Paddy always knew he'd be back behind the camera after Tyrannosaur. #DUKJourneyman

Paddy: I always knew I'd want to tell my own stories - my first short film became Tyrannosaur. With that I tested whether I could make something compelling in that short timeframe. #DUKJourneyman

Journeyman has been brewing for a long time - I knew I would make a boxing movie, but not necessarily one of the boxing genre. I played with the character of Matty and it became a film about brain injury. #DUKJourneyman

Rocky inspired me - it's one of the reasons I'm sitting here. The Rocky films are life lessons, about setting goals and reaching them. #DUKJourneyman

One of the things that falls down for me with boxing films is they try to look too real. They're so beautifully choreographed that you can see every move coming. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
Chris asks if Paddy deliberately tried to approach this film in a different way to his first. #DUKJourneyman

Watch a trailer for Paddy’s first film, Tyrannosaur, below.
I felt the characters in Tyrannosaur were much easier to write - but you really couldn't force the words into the mouths of the characters in Journeyman. #DUKJourneyman

A film is like a beast: anything it doesn't want it'll shake off. You have to put your ear to its belly and listen to what it wants. #DUKJourneyman

Terrific @PaddyConsidine analogy tonight after Journeyman screening. Bowled over by the intimate pain and struggle of the story #BritishFilm https://t.co/Vr4eAYhuYO

That might sounds like a load of s**t, but it's true! You can't fast track through an experience. It's a process. #DUKJourneyman

Acting in it made it harder- when it got to the edit I was caught in it, I couldn't separate myself from the experience of making it. #DUKJourneyman

Chris hands it over to the audience for questions. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
Our guest audience member asks who was watching Paddy while he was acting. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
Paddy: Nobody! It's just a leap of faith - I just act with the camera on me. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
I didn't originally want to act in the film but as I was writing it became clear Matty was me. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
An audience member asks about the violence the character displays in the film. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
Paddy: That was based on the research I did on brain injuries, there are violent phases but they can pass too. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
An audience member points out the number of boxing personalities in the film, including those that have sustained injuries. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
Paddy: They all know how unforgiving the sport is - it can be over for you in one night. I've had boxers walk out of this, the scenario is too awful. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
But I didn't want to make an anti-boxing film, I love boxing. In this film boxing is Matty's trial and his redemption. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
We need stories like this in the world - we're losing humanity a bit, connection, the idea of a love too huge to see. #DUKJourneyman
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) December 12, 2017
And with that, the evening came to an end.
And that's a wrap! Thanks so much to @PaddyConsidine for a great Q&A, and thanks too to @ChrisHewitt for chairing! #DUKJourneyman

#Journeyman is released on February 16 2018. Make sure you catch this powerful film, packed with brilliant performances. #DUKJourneyman
