Lynne Ramsay is nominated for You Were Never Really Here, while Bart Layton is nominated for American Animals. Both Bart and Lynne are also nominated for Best Screenplay, and their films are also both nominated in the Best British Independent Film category. Meanwhile, the best director category also includes Michael Pearce (Beast), Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) and Andrew Haigh (Lean on Pete).
The BIFAs also feature The Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director. This year’s nominees in the category are Michael Pearce (Beast), Leanne Welham (Pili), Matt Palmer (Calibre), Daniel Kokotajlo (Apostasy) and Richard Billingham (Ray & Liz).
For the first time, the voters for the awards this year were required to take compulsory training for unconscious bias. The final winners will be announced at a London ceremony on December 2nd.
