Paddy Considine was named Best Debut Director for his film Tyrannosaur at last night’s British Independent Film Awards, which also won Best Picture.
Tyrannosaur saw off strong competition to pick up the award, beating Asif Kapadia’s Senna, Steve McQueen’s Shame, Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lynne Ramsay.
Ramsay did not leave empty-handed however, emerging victorious in the Best Director field over Considine, McQueen, Alfredson and Ben Wheatley, for his film Kill List.
Considine’s success in the Best Debut Director category (also known as the Douglas Hickox Award) meant he edged out Joe Cornish, for Attack the Block, Richard Ayoade (Submarine), John Michael McDonagh (The Guard) and Ralph Fiennes for Coriolanus.
Kapadia also had better luck in another category, with Senna winning Best Documentary ahead of Kevin Macdonald’s Life in a Day, James Marsh’s Project Nim, Richard De Aragues’s TT3D: Closer to the Edge and Hell and Back Again by Danfung Dennis.
The Variety Award went to actor-director Kenneth Branagh, whilst Ralph Fiennes picked up the Richard Harris Award.
