Today, the nominees were announced for the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards.
Edward Berger, Martin McDonagh, Park Chan-wook, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Todd Field and Gina Prince-Bythewood were nominated in the Director category, and Charlotte Wells, Georgia Oakley, Marie Lidén, and Elena Sánchez Bellot and Maia Kenworthy were recognised for their work as directors in the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer category.
Huge congratulations to all of the above directors, and to all of our members whose fantastic work is nominated across all of the categories this year.
There is lots to celebrate. We were very encouraged that four of the five nominees for Outstanding Debut were women directors, and by the exciting range of stories, styles and genres that have been celebrated in the nominations this year.
Despite the interventions in the Director category brought about as a result of the BAFTA 2020 Review successfully yielding a gender-balanced longlist, it’s disappointing to see that only one woman director made it through it to the final nominations after the jury vote.
