In our upcoming masterclass, we’re joined by director, editor and producer Thomas Meadmore and documentary story consultant Nic Guttridge to dissect their gripping true-crime ITV feature documentary, The Real Vanishing Act — Missing Millionairess. Nic and Thomas will be joined by award-winning documentary director and Directors UK member Sophie Robinson to give insight into the making of this fascinating documentary.
Thomas, Nic and Sophie will explore the value of story-mapping when handling high-profile, sensitive content and in providing structure to a shoot. They will also discuss topics including the importance of trust-building when gaining access to contributors, the editing process, and balancing entertainment with ethics.

About Thomas Meadmore
Originally from Perth, Australia, Thomas lives and works in the UK as a director, editor and producer, and is currently in production for a new documentary project for ITV, Bad Twins.
Thomas’ other credits as a director include the AACTA-nominated The Night Caller (2020), a critically-acclaimed four-part true crime series for Sundance, NOW and Sky, feature documentary The Cancer Conflict (2022), which was shortlisted for best science documentary at the 2023 Grierson Awards, and The Spy Who Fell to Earth (2019). He has also worked extensively as an editor, writer and associate producer, with credits including Fred (associate producer, editor), Breaking Habits (editor, associate producer), The Outsider (director, editor, writer), The Guv’nor (editor) and The Amazing Race Australia (editor), for which he shared an Emmy award in 2012.
Among his credits, Thomas lists National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Channel4 and the BBC, and between making documentaries, he filmed short fiction comedy/thriller Demon, which was a finalist at the Rhode Island International Film Festival 2023 .
About Nic Guttridge
Nic Guttridge is a documentary story consultant and executive producer, who works collaboratively with filmmakers and production companies to maximise the impact of their work.
Recent credits include independent feature documentary The Cancer Conflict (Grierson Awards Shortlisted), My Life for CBBC (RTS South Awards Nominated), Inside Greenpeace (Sky Docs) and feature documentaries The Missing Millionairess (ITVX) and Savage Waters, for which the theatrical release with Odeon cinemas kicks off in November 2023.
Nic is former chair of the Directors UK Factual Committee, and is a mentor with the Documentary Campus Masterschool.
About Sophie Robinson
Sophie Robinson is a director with a strong reputation for telling impactful and powerful stories through the emotive characters that appear at the centre of her films. She is known for working collaboratively with her subjects to create outstanding documentaries which provide a platform for a wide variety of previously unheard voices.
Sophie’s most recent film My Dead Body for Channel 4 has been shortlisted for a 2023 Grierson Award. Her other credits include the Emmy, BAFTA and RTS award-winning Living Donor, part of the Netflix series Surgeon’s Cut, feature documentary and Netflix Original My Beautiful Broken Brain, which was executive produced by David Lynch and nominated for an Emmy as well as winning other documentary awards including the IDFA DOCU Award, The Ahftaz Festival Documentary Award, TRT and receiving a special mention from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists for best female director.
Sophie has extensive experience of working with diverse on–screen talent, including music acts Mumford & Sons (Mumford & Sons: We Wrote This Yesterday) and Chumbawamba (I Get Knocked Down), and is committed to working with diverse teams and creating extraordinary, thought-provoking stories.
