Nutopia call-out for BAME directors

Nutopia are looking to meet directors from a BAME background, and so they’re calling for Directors UK members to get in touch.

In 2018, Nutopia and Directors UK hosted two structured networking events for drama and documentary directors. Nutopia is working with us again now to widen its knowledge of a broader pool of directors, one that will suit its increasingly diverse and globally appealing production slate.

Nutopia is known for creating ground-breaking factual shows on a global scale. From the company’s inception Nutopia was at the forefront of the industry, creating a new genre of television – the ‘megadoc’ - the first of which was the Emmy Award-winning America: Story of US, which gained critical plaudits and record-breaking ratings success. The Story of Us format has sold globally in many international markets. Recent broadcast successes include the lavish drama-doc The Last Czars for Netflix, vividly re-telling the story of the downfall of the Romanov dynasty; epic One Strange Rock for National Geographic, a natural history/science collaboration with director Darren Aronofsky, hosted by Will Smith; Civilisations, the spectacular history of global art and civilisation for the BBC and PBS; and acclaimed feature documentary Unmasking Jihadi John: Anatomy of a Terrorist for HBO and Channel 4.

Currently in production is season 2 of One Strange Rock for National Geographic, and The World According to Jeff Goldblum, for the launch of the new Disney+ video on-demand service. Also in production, but currently unnamed, are premium international documentary series for Netflix and Amazon.

Nutopia are interested in broadening the range of directors they work with on their premium projects. They are especially keen to widen their talent pool with directors from a BAME background as this is an underrepresented group within our industry and the directing community. They are also presently working on relevant BAME-led content and subject matter.

If you are interested in getting to know Nutopia, and have worked in documentary, specialist factual, drama, commercials or music videos, then please send your CV and a link to your showreel to [email protected]. Nutopia will be working with Directors UK to help find the most relevant directors but will try and meet as many directors as possible.

Deadline: 5pm on Friday 11 October.

This opportunity is permitted as Positive Action within the 2010 Equalities Act and acknowledges the under-representation of BAME directors currently working in the TV industry. Nutopia is an equal opportunities employer and encourages and welcomes talent from diverse backgrounds.
